Religion News Association Awards for Religion Reporting Excellence

The RNA annual contests showcase religion reporting excellence in the news media, with more than $10,000 in prizes among 20+ categories. The entry deadline is typically in February or March (May for the student category).

American Academy of Religion
Annually the AAR honors the best in-depth reporting on religion. The contest is open to all print and Web-based journalists at media outlets of any size. The first-place winner receives $1,000.

Associated Church Press
Each year the ACP sponsors a “Best of the Christian Press” awards competition. Categories and guidelines are released in late fall, with eligible entries due in early or mid-January.

Association of Opinion Journalists
The Opinion Journalism Contest recognizes the achievements of two opinion journalists each year. Entries may include editorials, columns and/or op-ed pieces. Judging will be based on clarity, strength of writing, creativity and impact on public policy and quality of life. One journalist in each circulation division will be recognized with a $200 check and an engraved award.

Casey Medals for Meritorious Journalism
Recognizes exemplary reporting on children and families. First-place winners receive $1,000 and will be honored at a ceremony in  Washington, D.C. Casey Medalists are automatically considered for two additional $5,000 awards presented by the America’s Promise Alliance.

Overseas Press Club of America
Provides $1,000 awards for several categories.

Religion Communicators Council
The Wilbur Awards are given for outstanding communication of religious issues, values and themes produced by members of the mainstream media. Categories include newspapers, magazines, editorial cartoons, photography, books, television programs and commercials, radio programs and feature films. Awards will be presented as part of the RCC national convention.

Taylor Family Award for Fairness in Newspapers
Encourages fairness in news coverage by daily newspapers in the United States. The cash prize is $10,000 for the winner and $1,000 for each of the top two finalists.

International Women’s Media Foundation
